Yunus Akintunde’s Generous Donation Commemorates World Press Freedom Day

In a poignant tribute to the indispensable role of journalists, Senator Dr. Yunus Akintunde has made a significant donation to the League of Veteran Journalists in Oyo State NUJ Iyaganku. The generous contribution, consisting of office furniture, was presented during the official unveiling of the refurbished League of Veteran Journalists House at the Nigerian Union of Journalists Press Center in Iyaganku, Ibadan, coinciding with World Press Freedom Day 2024.

Represented by Hon. Kunle Olatunji, his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Senator Akintunde’s donation comprises one office table, two coffee tables, one L-shaped settee, and two lounge chairs. These items aim to enhance the working environment of the League of Veteran Journalists, symbolizing both practical support and recognition of the dedication and sacrifices made by journalists in upholding press freedom and democratic values.

World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on May 3rd, underscores the fundamental human right to freedom of expression and the pivotal role of a free press in fostering transparency, accountability, and democracy. It serves as a moment to celebrate press freedom principles, assess global press freedom, and honor journalists who have perished in the line of duty.

Senator Dr. Yunus Akintunde’s gesture comes amidst global challenges to press freedom, including censorship, attacks on journalists, and attempts to erode media independence. By backing the League of Veteran Journalists, Senator Akintunde not only acknowledges the significance of a free press but also reaffirms his dedication to upholding democratic values and advancing transparency and accountability in governance.

Pa Banji Ogundele, leading the League of Veteran Journalists in Oyo State NUJ Iyaganku, expressed profound gratitude to Senator Dr. Yunus Akintunde for his generous donation. The event saw the presence of notable figures, including former Governor of Ogun State and veteran journalist Aremo Olusegun Osoba, Chief Niyi Akintola SA, former Deputy Governor of Ogun State Prince Adeseye Adesegun, and other dignitaries.
