Oyo Rep’ Member, Odidiomo Calls for Quality Data Protection for National Development

In furtherance of his duties as the Chairman House of Reps Committee on ICT and Cyber security, Hon Stanley Adedeji Odidiomo has called for more proactive practices to secure data access and data Protection as a valuable asset in Nigeria.

Hon Stanley Olajide Adedeji, representing Ibadan Northwest/ Southwest Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, said this while speaking at a one-day capacity building workshop organized by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, NDPC for members of the ICT and Cyber securities committees of the Nigeria Senate and House of Assembly in Abuja.In his words.

“Data access and Protection is the strength of any of the developed countries of the world because the people over there are well informed of the advantages inherent in quality data access and Protection in other to guard against untrusted access which can make private data available in public domain to be guarded in other to curb data manipulation and misuse”

“Nigeria must rise to the occasion of critical usage of data for national development as data is required for quality information which is useful for national planning and development “

He further urged all data controllers and members of the committee to collaborate with the NDPC for the country’s benefit and advised the commission to expose non-compliant agencies.

Also, the chairman Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Securities, Sen. Shuaibu Salisu in a remark emphasized the importance of data as being a national critical resource and hence must be protected and secured.

Salisu who maintained that the commission should create more environment for enlightenment and awareness through Media and Programmes, added that the creation of Data privacy clubs in schools will create more awareness amongst young Nigerians.

The National Commissioner for NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji urged the public sector to reinforce data privacy and protection practices.

He also said that awareness is being created to ensure that all MDAs comply with the provision of the law and that by January 2024, data compliance statistics for the year 2023 will be released.

“The commission is set to work and will ensure to boost the efforts of the current administration, to drive development and the economy with investments and creation of new jobs in the country,” He concluded.
