Newsonline Nigeria reports that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) closed all land borders with the Niger Republic.

The decision follows the recent coup d’etat in the neighboring country. NCS’ acting controller general, Bashir Adewale, made the disclosure during a visit to the Jibia border in Katsina on Friday evening.

Adewale said the closure of the borders is in compliance with the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS)’s directive to suspend the movement of cargo until further notice.

He added the NCS will sensitise the border communities to ensure full compliance, adding that the decision was taken in the interest of peace and stability between the two countries.

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had informed the Senate that (ECOWAS) borders were closed to Niger Republic.

Tinubu also informed the Senate about the cutting off of electricity supply to Niger adding that more sanctions are underway.

The letter by Tinubu which was read on the floor of the apex legislative Chamber during plenary by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, said the ECOWAS States will insist power returned to the democratically elected leaders of the country.
