As part of its overall resolve to rid Oyo State of cultism and it related activities, a bill to prohibit the unholy act has scaled 2nd reading in the Oyo State House of Assembly.
The bill jointly sponsored by the Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon Adebo Ogundoyin, the Minority Leader, Hon Asimiyu Alarape and the Party Whip, Hon Isiaka Kazeem Tunde scaled 2nd reading Tuesday.
The Bill seeks to abrogate Secret Cultism Prohibition Act of 2000 which seeks to limit cult activities to only few places.
When passed, it will be become an offence to belong to cult groups or engage in cult related activities in Primary and Secondary Schools, higher Schools of learning in Oyo State, and other public places including markets, offices, communities and so on.
According to the Speaker, the Oyo State Cultism Prohibition Act, 2022 is all encompassing as it makes provision for cultism and cult related activities in schools at all levels and all other public places, offices, markets, religious centers and others inclusive.
Hon Adebo Ogundoyin decried the growing number of cult activities amongst the people especially the youth.
” The bill is important and we are taking it seriously. It will be committed to appropriate House Committees for scrutiny” Oyo Speaker.
While seconding the motion, member representing Afijio State Constituency, Hon Seyi Adisa described the bill as timely and pivotal to tackling cultism in Oyo State.
