The Academic Staff Union Of Universities, ASUU has stated that the ongoing strike would be extended by another four weeks to give the Federal Government more time to comply with its demands At the conclusion of its National Executive Council meeting on Sunday at its national secretariat in Abuja, the union made the choice.
The union said in a statement issued by its president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, that the strike would be postponed for four weeks to give the government more time to satisfactorily address all outstanding issues. “Following extensive deliberations and taking cognizance of Government’s past failures to abide by its own timelines in addressing issues raised in the 2020 FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Action (MOA), NEC resolved that the strike be rolled over for another 4 weeks. The role-over strike action will begin at 1:00 a.m. on August 1st, 2022.
ASUU declared a one-month strike for its members on February 14, 2022, in protest of the government’s refusal to abide by the terms of the Memorandum of Action (MoA) it had signed with the federal government and its insistence that all federal employees use the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) as their payment system.
The union suggested UTAS as a substitute platform for the payment of salaries for its members because inconsistencies in the use of IPPIS were discovered.
On March 14, it announced a two-month strike. After the two-month warning strike’s expiration, ASUU declared a three-month strike by the teachers. The 168th day of the strike began on Monday, August 1, 2022.
