Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has condemned and frown at the exclusion of the state policing in the resolution of the National Assembly, in respect of constitutional amendment.

Rt. Hon. Abubakar Y. Suleiman and Bauchi State Speaker disclosed this in the communique issued at the end of the first quarter(2022) general meeting of the conference of speakers of state legislatures of Nigeria held on 2nd April, 2022 at the IITA, Ibadan, Oyo State.

He said, “after exhaustive deliberations, the Conference issued the following resolutions at the end of the meeting:
The Conference commends and appreciates the efforts of the Executive Governor of Oyo State Engr Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde and the Hon Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly Rt Hon Adebo Edward Ogundoyin for hosting the 1st Quarter General Meeting of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures with the theme: “The Imperative of On-Going Alteration of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”

The Conference acknowledged the receipt of the National Assembly’s Resolution on the ongoing Review of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Recall, the National Assembly officially transmitted the Resolution to the State Houses of Assembly for further legislative actions;

The Conference however frowns at the exclusion of the State Policing in the Resolution of the National Assembly. The Conference therefore directed its Committee on Constitution Review to further liaise with the National Assembly with a view to ensuring State Policing is reconsidered. This is hinged on the unfortunate prevailing security challenges in the country.

The Conference condemns in strong terms the deadly attacks by the terrorists on the Abuja-Kaduna Train on Monday 28th March, 2022. The Conference calls on the Security Agencies and the Federal Government to go after the terrorists while ensuring that the kidnapped passengers are rescued unhurt.

While we commiserate with families of the victims of the dastardly act, the Conference calls on the Federal government and the security agencies to take measures to avert future occurrences.
