A lot of developments are going on in PDP ahead of the Thursday NEC meeting of the party where the decision of the zoning committee that the North should produce the next chairman of the PDP will be rarified.
Different groups in PDP including the Northern caucus of the party and some aggrieved party members from the South-West who believe that the national chairmanship should be micro zoned to the South-West are preparing for a showdown at the NEC meeting of the PDP on Thursday.
However, a report from Leadership newspaper has it that a group known as National Leadership Forum of the PDP has accused a powerful Governor from the South-South of sharing money to force party members to support his moves aimed at achieving his 2023 presidential ambition. That will form the basis of our discussion in this article.
Why does crisis loom in PDP over the accusation that a powerful Governor of the party is sharing money owing to his 2023 presidential ambition?
Many members of the PDP appear to be fed up that an influential Governor who is a major financier of the PDP has been calling the shot in PDP.
The anger is that he masterminded the plan which made the zoning committee made a u-turn and recommended that the national chairmanship of the party be zoned to the North.
The development in PDP suggests that the Northern PDP caucus plan to team up with the South-West that is interested in producing the next national chairman of the PDP to force the NEC of the party to reject the recommendations of the zoning committee.
This is capable of causing a crisis in PDP because this said powerful Governor from the South-South will never allow the NEC to reject the decision of the zoning committee.
I see a gang up of Northern power brokers in PDP who are interested in 2023 presidency and the South-West PDP that wants to produce the National Chairman of the PDP against this influential Governor from the South-South.
If the accusation of Olusola Salau, a PDP chieftain from Ogun State that this powerful Governor has been sharing money and bullying party members to achieve his 2023 presidential ambition is anything to go by, it means that this Governor from the South-South is out to achieve his aim in the PDP and won’t mind rocking the boat to ensure that the party zones its 2023 presidential ticket to the South.
The NEC meeting of the party will likely end inclusive which may mark the beginning of another crisis in the party since members can’t agree on the region that should produce the next national chairman of the PDP at the October 30 and 31 convention.
