The Oyo State House of Assembly has called on the state Government to put measures in place for the urgent review and harmonization of Oyo State laws effective from 2000.

The call followed a motion on the need for review and harmonization of Oyo State laws brought before the house by Hon, Hakeem Adedibu (Iwajowa).

The House noted that the last review and harmonization of Oyo State laws was carried out in year 2000 hence the call for further review as there are several new and amended legislations that are yet to be harmonised.

According to the resolutions, the laws of Oyo State 2000 is making research efforts cumbersome and problematic while also making implementation and interpretation difficult.

The Speaker , Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon Adebo Ogundoyin said it was time the Oyo State laws were reviewed, harmonised and updated for consistency, ease of application and compliance as well as in line with international best practice.

” The need for harmonization and review of Oyo State laws 2000 is long overdue. As we call on the Executive arm of Government through the Ministry of Justice to start the process, there is also the vital need to complement it with proper and adequate sensitization of members of the public on the laws (new and amended) made to govern them as ignorance isn’t an excuse to breach the law” Ogundoyin stressed.

The House has therefore directed its Committee on Public Petitions and Judiciary to work with the Attorney General of the state in particular and the State Ministry of Justice in general on the possible review and harmonization of the Oyo State laws.

Other Lawmakers in their submissions harped on the need for the 9th Oyo State House of Assembly to again make history by encouraging and supporting moves to have another review and harmonization of Oyo State laws.
